Following the announcement of the 2019 National Budget by finance minister Professor Mthuli Ncube, duty, surtax and VAT for some imported goods will have to be paid for in foreign currency. This comes in the wake of a negative balance of payment bedeviling the country`s economy with an import bill comprising more of products considered to be non-essential. Perhaps its a means of cutting down the importation of such goods while raising the much needed foreign currency.

Some of the goods for which Duty will be charged in forex include:

  • Motor Vehicles
  • Whiskies
  • Suitcases
  • Trunks
  • Handbags
  • Household linen
  • Cider
  • Wines
  • Vodkas
  • Brandy
  • Cigars
  • Some cigarettes
  • Perfumes
  • Make up preparations
  • Manicure & pedicure preparations

Below is the full list of goods that will be taxed in foreign currency, as published in S. I. 252A of 2018.
