If you are reading this then you use the internet. The internet is a fascinating place, a place most people cannot even do without. More than 4.6 billion people globally are active users of the internet. That number is quite staggering because that is roughly 60 per cent of the world population.  Over half of that number is in Asia. The Oxford dictionary defines the internet as a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols. In this article, I will discuss some facts about the internet that you will find interesting.

An Overview Of Africa

The approximate number of internet users in Africa is 526 million – that is roughly 12 per cent of the total number of internet users globally. The number of unconnected people in Africa is roughly 871 million. The African continent has a population of about 1.35 billion people. This means 65 per cent of the continent is not connected to the internet. Lots of work has to be done to reduce that number; it is too high. Massive spikes in internet usage have been witnessed in Central Africa and North Africa. Those regions have experienced internet usage spikes of 40 per cent and 14 per cent respectively. That growth is for the period spanning from last year to this current year. Overall though, Africa is at the apex of internet usage growth globally.

Nigeria boasts of the topmost internet usage in Africa. Interesting to note also is that in Nigeria roughly 75 per cent of traffic on the web is via mobile smartphones. (Side note: at a global level web traffic via mobile smartphones circles around 50 per cent). That web activity is largely due to the proliferation of e-commerce in that country. This is a scenario that presents huge prospects for mobile app innovations.

Let Us Look At Zimbabwe

In Zimbabwe, there are almost 5 million internet users – that is 0.1 per cent of the total number of internet users in the world. The Zimbabwean population is almost 15 million people now. That means one-third of Zimbabweans use the internet – still a long way to go to get everyone covered. From last year to this year, the number of internet users increased by roughly 413000 people. Spanning from last year into currently the number of social media users and mobile connections went down. Almost 1 million people stopped using social media in that period. Over 720000 mobile connections went offline during that same period.

Let me highlight some more stats regarding social media usage in Zimbabwe. What do you think is the most used social media platform in Zimbabwe? Well, it turns out it is Pinterest. The stats I am about to mention here are as at October 2020. Pinterest stood at 40.92 per cent, followed by Facebook at 28.23 per cent, then Twitter at 22.76 per cent, YouTube at 6.06 per cent, Instagram at 1.14 per cent, and LinkedIn at 0.33 per cent.

The Most Commonly Used Browser

There are several browsers that people use to surf the internet. Some immediate examples are Mozilla Firefox, Chromium, and Google Chrome, just to mention a few. The most commonly used browser is Google Chrome. 65 per cent of people browsing the internet do so using Google Chrome. Interestingly, just a mere 4 per cent prefer to use Mozilla Firefox.

Websites

You probably might guess; the most commonly visited website is Google. This comes as no surprise since well beyond 5 billion searches are conducted on the site every day. That is roughly over 40000 searches every second – over 1 trillion searches annually. In second place is YouTube where over 5 billion videos are watched daily. There are over 1.8 billion websites in the world today. There are over 450 million websites that were developed using WordPress. This makes WordPress a market leader with a market share of around 35 per cent. In other words, 35 per cent of the internet is managed by WordPress. When we look at the top 100 websites in the world, 15 per cent of them were developed using WordPress.

Comparative Look At Global Social Media Usage

The top 5 most used social media platforms are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Snapchat. Take note that Facebook also has Facebook Messenger on the side – over 1.3 billion people use it worldwide. Facebook has 2.4 billion active users, Instagram has 1 billion, and Twitter has 330 million. LinkedIn has 310 million active users whereas Snapchat has 294 million active users.

Blogs – A Power House

Almost 80 per cent of internet users visit blogs online. The most popular content online is in the form of blogs. Blogs rank significantly high when it comes to authentic sources of information. There are over half a billion active blogs in the world. One-third of active websites in the world are blogs.

These are some of the interesting facts about the internet that I thought to share with you. I deliberately chose them for particular reasons. One reason has to do with inspiring you to come up with business ideas. The other reason has to do with giving you insights that can help you in your businesses. The 1st of January 1983 is considered to be the day the internet began. So the internet has come a long way.
