It was a glitzy affair last week Wednesday as the inaugural Capital Markets Awards were held in Zimbabwe. The event was brought together by the Business Weekly and Financial Markets Indaba (FMI) recognised contributions to the capital markets in Zimbabwe. A total of 19 awards were handed out on the night, 3 of which were lifetime achievement awards. The idea was instituted to give recognition to sometimes unsung heroes of the investment and capital markets world.

The best performing listed company went to Zimplow Holdings while Econet Wireless Zimbabwe picked up the Corporate Governance Award. The best performing Asset Manager went to Old Mutual. Delta Corporation received the best merger and acquisition transaction of the year. Insurer Zimnat was crowned the best equities fund manager of the year.

Conglomerate Innscor Africa Limited was awarded the diversity champion award. InterHorizon’s securities picked up a well-deserved gong as the best investment advisory service. They also received the best investment research provider. The best investor communication award went to Delta beverages which has certainly set the standard for investor communication over the years. The technology went o Ctrade which has gone above and beyond being the first to introduce a mobile trading app while also harnessing USSD technology in investing. Innovative stockbroker of the year went Morgan & Co for their research app.

The best real estate fund went to Old Mutual Asset Management, we would expect no less given their footprint. Stockbroker of the year went to Lynton-Edwards stockbrokers. Best pension fund performance was awarded to ZB Financial holdings. Kudzai Mubaiwa of the Mari podcast received the people’s choice award for advocacy while Sithule Tshuma of Qoki received the advocacy award for the diaspora.

Lifetime achievement awards went out to the late mark Tunmer of Imara capital Zimbabwe. Collen Tapfumaneyi as CEO of Escrow group (Ctrade). Campbell Musiwa the CEO of Chengetedzai depository Company also received a lifetime achievement award.

The awards mark an important first and as pointed out before celebrate some usually unsung heroes. As the Business Weekly reported their Editor Herbet Zharare said they are working on making the event an annual affair. The process was all involved and has been running for months. It started with initial nominees, then a shortlist. The adjudication was done by industry peers and professionals to arrive at the final winners. Our sincerest congratulations to all winners and the organisers of the event.
